GIVE: Community for Community

The GIVE Festival is a gathering of neighboring businesses, artists and residents of Philadelphia to create a music and art festival benefiting local artistic and charity organizations.

This year the festival, celebrating its fourth year, will benefit the Music and Mentorship Program in conjunction with The Rex Foundation. Music and Mentorship, a program of Intercultural Family Services, Inc. (IFSI), was established in 1998 in response to cuts in arts and music programming across the Philadelphia School District. The program offers urban children and youth an opportunity to develop their creativity, self-expression, and self-esteem by providing mentorship through arts instruction and performance. The Rex Foundation was founded by the Grateful Dead in 1983, and has distributed $8.3 million in grants to over 1,000 grassroots programs across the country that might otherwise be under the radar of larger funders.

GIVE will be taking place on Saturday September 20th, 2008 from noon to 10:00pm in Liberty Lands Park. Liberty Lands Park is located at 3rd and Poplar streets in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia.

The festival will feature all-day musical entertainment by King Brit’s Back 2 Basics Band w/ Dozia, Rich Medina, As Human w/ Taylor McFerrin, The Spinning Leaves, Hezekiah Jones, DJ Frosty, Oudblues, John Francis, The Great Unknown, Audible Eye, and Alokli. The Philadelphia Independent Craft Market will also be on hand presenting local artists’ original and handcrafted works for purchase. The market will include nearly thirty vendors with wares of all kinds. Food and refreshments will be available through The Curbside Chef, and all food proceeds go directly to the Music and Mentorship Program and Rex Foundation.
